Visits to the doctor – and even the emergency room – are sometimes inevitable throughout the aging process. According to research provided AARP, the top eight health issues that cause older adults to get admitted to the hospital include:

Cardiac arrhythmias. These heartbeat irregularities such as atrial fibrillation can cause palpitations, a sudden drop in blood pressure that can lead to unconsciousness, stroke and even sudden cardiac arrest. In 2009, 543,000 adults over the age of 65 were hospitalized for an irregular heartbeat.

Congestive heart failure. In 2009, 751,000 adults over 65 entered the hospital for congestive heart failure. Why so prominent? One reason is that people are living longer with heart disease, which over time damages or weakens the heart muscle, which can lead to heart failure — the heart’s inability to pump well.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In 2008, 822,500 people with COPD, age 40 and over, entered a hospital. Smoking is the primary culprit behind COPD, an umbrella term that encompasses emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Coronary atherosclerosis. In 2009, 753,000 adults over 45 were hospitalized for coronary atherosclerosis, or a blockage of blood flow to the heart from the build-up of fatty plaque. That could cause a heart attack, resulting in heart damage, or simply chest pain from lessened blood flow that hasn’t yet led to permanent damage.

Diabetes. In 2009, 655,000 adults entered the hospital because of diabetes. Being overweight, inactive and age 45 and older are three prominent risk factors for type 2, or adult-onset, diabetes. Common reasons for hospitalization due to diabetes include strokes, heart attacks, ulcers and dehydration from elevated blood sugar levels.

Infection. Pneumonia is the most common infection (see below) but urinary tract infections are common as well. In 2011, the estimated total number of infections in hospitals reached more than 721,000, according to the CDC.

Medication problems. Drug reactions of some sort led to 4.6 million drug-related emergency department visits in 2009, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Medications most commonly involved: corticosteroids, blood thinners, sedatives and sleep aids.

Pneumonia. Pneumonia caused 674,000 visits to emergency departments in 2013, according to the CDC. As we age, our waning immune system makes us more vulnerable to both bacterial and viral pneumonia. Other conditions like diabetes, stroke and flu can predispose you to pneumonia as well.

Stroke. About 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke each year, according to the CDC. When blood flow is cut off to part of the brain — because of a clot in an artery or a blood vessel that burst — the result is a stroke, which kills brain cells and can lead to death.

Getting admitted to the hospital for any illness, ailment or fall is a stressful, frightening life event.  Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disease and is the most common form of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease causes problems with memory, thinking, and behavior. Alzheimer’s disease typically progresses slowly in three general stages — mild (early stage), moderate (middle stage), and severe (late stage). Since Alzheimer’s affects people in different ways, each person will experience symptoms – or progress through Alzheimer’s stages – differently.

Does your senior parent live with an Alzheimer’s disease or dementia diagnosis? Because Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia can severely impact your senior parent’s cognitive function, they may be less able to manage the home – for example, they may forget to turn off the water, or they may forget important phone numbers or how to dial the phone. Additionally, they may forget how certain home appliances function – such as the stove, garage door, etc.

“While some Alzheimer’s behaviors can be managed medically, many, such as wandering and agitation, cannot,” according to the National Institute on Aging (NIH). It is more effective to change the person’s surroundings – for example, to remove dangerous items – than to try to change behaviors. Changing the home environment can give the person more freedom to move around independently and safely.”

In order to create an Alzheimer’s- and dementia-safe home, the NIH recommends that the following be added to your senior parent’s home:

  • Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in or near the kitchen and in all bedrooms
  • Emergency phone numbers (ambulance, poison control, doctors, hospital, etc.) and the person’s address near all phones
  • Safety knobs and an automatic shut-off switch on the stove
  • Childproof plugs for unused electrical outlets and childproof latches on cabinet doors

In order to create a safe home, you should also lock up or remove the following items from your senior parent’s home:

  • Prescription and over-the-counter medicines, and alcohol
  • Cleaning and household products, such as paint thinner and matches
  • Poisonous plants
  • Guns and other weapons, scissors, knives, power tools, and machinery
  • Gasoline cans and other dangerous items in the garage

In addition, your senior parent with Alzheimer’s disease may struggle with walking, or may forget the location of rugs, steps, and stairs throughout the home. In order to prevent falls and injuries:

  • Remove unnecessary furniture
  • Get rid of clutter, such as piles of newspapers and magazines
  • Have a sturdy handrail on stairways
  • Put carpet on stairs, or mark the edges of steps with brightly colored tape so the person can see them more easily
  • Put a gate across the stairs if the person has balance problems
  • Remove small throw rugs and use rugs with nonskid backing instead
  • Make sure cords to electrical outlets are out of the way or tacked to baseboards
  • Install nonskid floor strips and ensure that your senior parent wears shoes and slippers with good traction

Alzheimer’s disease and dementia can severely impact your senior parent’s health, well-being, and independence, especially when they live alone at home. As your senior parent’s progression worsens, their need for consistent, professional care increases, as their ability to care for themselves safely weakens. If you’re acting as your parent’s only source of care, the quality of the care you provide can diminish as your stress and depression increase. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, call SYNERGY HomeCare or Corona, Riverside, or Anaheim Hills. Our in-home caregivers are trained to provide your elderly parent with compassionate, courteous, and professional care services to ensure that your senior parent is comfortable, healthy, and safe in their own home. Our caregiver services include:

  • Personal assistance care: Bathing, showering, using the restroom, getting in and out of bed, wheelchairs, etc.
  • Errands and transportation: Driving to the doctor’s office or an appointment, picking up prescriptions, going grocery shopping, etc.
  • Meal assistance: Complete and nutritious meal planning, preparing, and cleanup
  • Light housekeeping: Assistance with laundry, ironing, changing linens, kitchen/bathroom cleaning and organizing, etc.
  • Companionship: Encouraging friendly and supportive conversation, active thinking (structuring pastimes, hobbies and games), light exercise, etc.
  • Live-in and 24-hour care

Sometimes, the most difficult part of exercising is motivating yourself to get moving. Avoid the couch and potato chips by integrating exercise into your busy schedule and making exercise fun – and even social! Share these Office of Women’s Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, tips with your loved ones and friends and get moving today!

1. Integrate exercise into your busy schedule

• If you can’t set aside one block of time, do short activities throughout the day, such as three 10-minute walks.

• Create opportunities for activity. Try parking your car farther away from where you are headed. If you ride the bus or train, get off one or two stops early and walk.

• Use stairs instead of the elevator or escalator.

• Take breaks at work to stretch, or take quick walks.

• Doing yard work or household chores counts as physical activity. Turn on some upbeat music to help you do chores faster and speed up your heart rate.

2. Make exercise fun

• Choose activities that you enjoy, and vary your activities so you don’t get bored. For example, use different jogging, walking or biking paths, or bike one day and jog the next.

• Reward yourself when you achieve your weekly goals.

• Plan active vacations that will keep you moving, such as taking tours and sightseeing on foot.

3. Socialize

• Join a hiking or running club.

• Go dancing with your partner or friends.

• Turn activities into social occasions – for example, go to a movie after you and a friend work out.

4. Overcome challenges

• Don’t let rainy or cold weather keep you on the couch – try activities such as indoor fitness classes or at-home workout videos. You can also do push-ups or lift hand weights. If you don’t have hand weights, use canned foods or bottles filled with water or sand.

• Contact your local recreational center or church to see if they have indoor activity programs that you can join.

June is Alzheimer’s Brain Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about brain health, Alzheimer’s disease, and all other dementia. An estimated 5.8 million Americans age 65 years and older have Alzheimer’s dementia in 2020, including 690,000 people in California. The number of people with Alzheimer’s dementia in California is expected to rise to 840,000 by year 2025.

While there is no way to prevent, slow, or cure Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, growing evidence shows that “people can reduce their risk of cognitive decline by adopting key lifestyle habits,” according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Follow these 10 tips to help you achieve optimal brain health this June:

1. Exercise. Engage in regular cardiovascular exercise that elevates your heart rate and increases blood flow to the brain and body. Several studies have found an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline. SYNERGY HomeCare of Corona, Riverside, and Anaheim Hills in-home caregivers can support your senior parent with light exercise activities.

2. Hit the books. Formal education in any stage of life will help reduce your risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

3. Don’t smoke. Evidence shows that smoking increases risk of cognitive decline. Quitting smoking can reduce that risk to levels comparable to those who have not smoked.

4. Engage in heart-healthy habits. Evidence shows that risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke — obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes — negatively impact your cognitive health. SYNERGY HomeCare’s in-home caregivers can ensure that your senior parent attend doctor’s appointments, take proper medications, and eat a healthy diet to manage their heart health.

5. Prevent head trauma. Brain injury can raise your risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Wear a seat belt, use a helmet when riding a bike, and take steps to prevent falls. SYNERGY HomeCare’s in-home caregivers can help your senior parent avoid falls by clearing pathways through the home, providing light housekeeping services, and helping to install grab bars and other safety tools in the home.

6. Eat healthy. Eat a healthy and balanced diet that is lower in fat and higher in vegetables and fruit to help reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Although research on diet and cognitive function is limited, certain diets, including Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to risk reduction. SYNERGY HomeCare’s in-home caregivers can help plan healthy meals, prepare a shopping list, go grocery shopping, and prepare healthy meals for your senior parent.

7. Stick to a bedtime routine. Not getting enough sleep due to conditions like insomnia or sleep apnea may result in problems with memory and thinking. SYNERGY HomeCare’s in-home caregivers can help your loved one stick to a healthy bedtime schedule.

8. Care for your mental health. Some studies link a history of depression with increased risk of cognitive decline, so seek medical treatment if you have symptoms of depression, anxiety, or other mental health concerns. SYNERGY HomeCare of Corona, Riverside, and Anaheim Hills in-home caregivers provide companionship services to help your senior parent combat the loneliness that is often caused by social isolation.

9. Stay social. Staying socially engaged may support brain health. Staying active and maintaining a level of independence are important for the health and happiness of your senior parent. Our in-home caregivers, who are here to make the best of every moment for your aging parent, can help them safely connect with friends and family.

10. Challenge your brain. Complete a jigsaw puzzle. Paint a picture. Play games, such as bridge, that make you think strategically.

If your senior parent lives with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, call SYNERGY HomeCare of Corona, Riverside, or Anaheim Hills. SYNERGY HomeCare’s in-home caregivers are highly skilled and trained to care for your loved one living with dementia. Our in-home caregivers help to:

• Adapt your parent’s home environment to enhance safety and independence.
• Provide transportation for medical, community, and social appointments.
• Provide reminders for medication.
• Provide enhanced social activities appropriate to the needs of your parent.
• Offer meal planning and preparation to ensure good nutritional support.
• Provide personal care services including grooming, personal hygiene, and dressing.
• Help with household tasks.

The Inland Empire is scorching – temperatures are pushing 100 degrees. Does your senior parent live in the Corona, Riverside or Anaheim Hills areas? People ages 65 years or older are more prone to heat-related health problems. Extreme heat caused 7,415 heat-related deaths in the United States from 1999 to 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If your senior parent lives alone, ask yourself these questions to ensure that your elderly parent is equipped to handle the heat:

• Is your senior parent drinking enough water?

• Do they have access to air conditioning?

• Does your senior parent know how to keep cool?

• Do they show any signs of heat stress?

Older adults are more susceptible to heat stress because their bodies do not adjust as well as young people’s bodies to sudden changes in temperature, and they are more likely to take prescription medicines that affect the body’s ability to control its temperature or sweat, according to the CDC.

If you’re concerned about your senior parent’s health and wellness during this heat wave, take the steps to help them stay cool, hydrated and informed. The CDC offers a comprehensive list of tips to help you and your senior parent stay safe and hydrated this summer.

Stay Cool

Wear appropriate clothing: Lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.

Stay cool indoors: Stay in an air-conditioned home. If your senior parent’s home does not have air conditioning, have a friend or caregiver take them to the shopping mall or public library – even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your senior parent’s body stay cooler when they go back into the heat. If you’re unsure of what’s available in the Corona, Riverside or Anaheim Hills areas, call the Riverside County Health Department at 951-358-5000 to see if there are any heat-relief shelters in your senior parent’s area.

Keep in mind: Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, they will not prevent heat-related illness. Taking a cool shower or bath or moving to an air-conditioned place is a much better way to cool off. If your senior parent struggles with balance issues, or does not feel safe showering or bathing, consider calling SYNERGY HomeCare of Corona/Riverside. Our caregivers can ensure that your senior parent is equipped to handle the heat, and bathe safely.

Schedule outdoor activities carefully: Limit your senior parent’s outdoor activity to when it’s coolest, like during morning and evening hours.

Wear broad spectrum or UVA/UVB sunscreen: Sunburns can affect your parent’s ability to cool down and can cause dehydration. If your senior parent goes outdoors, ensure that they wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes prior to going out.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of fluids: Drink more fluids, regardless of how active you or your senior parent are, and do not wait until you are thirsty before you drink.

Warning: If your senior parent’s doctor limits the amount they drink, or has them on water pills, ask their doctor how much they should drink while the weather is hot.

Stay away from sugary or alcoholic beverages – these actually cause you to lose more body fluid.

Replace salts: Heavy sweating removes salt and minerals from the body that need to be replaced. A sports drink can replace the salt and minerals that your parent loses in sweat.

• If your parent is on a low-salt diet, has diabetes, high blood pressure or other chronic conditions, talk with their doctor before encouraging them to drink a sports beverage or take salt tablets.

Stay Informed

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease that is the 6th leading cause of death among adults in the United States, and is the 5th leading cause of death among adults aged 65-85 years old, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Because Alzheimer’s disease affects the parts of the brain that control thought, memory and language, it’s extremely difficult for a person with Alzheimer’s disease to manage their health and wellness. If your senior parent suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, keep an eye out for these common signs of illness that often occur in Alzheimer’s patients, according to the National Institute on Aging.

Fever

If your senior parent suffering from Alzheimer’s disease has a temperature of 2 or more degrees above their normal temperature, call their primary care doctor immediately. A fever may be a sign of:

•  Infection, caused by germs
•  Dehydration, caused by a lack of fluids
•  Heat stroke
• Constipation

Flu and Pneumonia

Make sure your senior parent suffering with Alzheimer’s disease receives an annual flu shot, along with a pneumonia shot once after age 65. Flu and pneumonia may cause:

•  Fever
•  Chills
•  Aches and pains
•  Vomiting
•  Coughing
•  Trouble breathing

Falls

Alzheimer’s disease can make your senior parent more susceptible to falls, as those with Alzheimer’s disease may have trouble walking and keeping their balance, or they may have changes in depth perception. To reduce the chance of a fall:

•  Clean up clutter
•  Remove throw rugs
•  Use chairs with arms
•  Put grab bars in the bathroom
•  Use good lighting
•  Make sure your senior parent wears sturdy shoes with good traction

Dehydration

Signs of dehydration to look for include:

•  Dry mouth
•  Dizziness
•  Hallucinations (hallucinations may also be caused by Alzheimer’s disease, too)
•  Rapid heart rate

Incontinence

This may happen at any stage of Alzheimer’s disease, but it is more often a problem in the later stages. Signs of this problem are leaking urine, problems emptying the bladder, and soiled underwear and bed sheets. Be sure to let your senior parent’s doctor know if this happens and, when you speak with their doctor, be ready to answer the following questions:

•  What medicines is your senior parent taking?
•  Does your senior parent leak urine when they laugh, cough or lift something?
•  Does your senior parent urinate often?
•  Can your senior parent get to the bathroom in time?
•  Is your senior parent urinating in places other than the bathroom?
•  Is your senior parent soiling their clothes or bed sheets each night?
•  Do these problems happen each day or once in a while?

Dental problems

As Alzheimer’s disease gets worse, your senior parent may need help taking care of their teeth or dentures. Check your parent’s mouth for any problems such as:

•  Sores
•  Decayed teeth
•  Food “pocketed” in the cheek or on the roof of the mouth
•  Lumps

Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating illness that severely impacts the life of your senior parent. Their ability to function decreases significantly, and their health can deteriorate drastically without proper care. Are you able to care for your senior parent suffering from Alzheimer’s disease? If you’re finding that the demands of caring for your senior parent are affecting your life and the quality of care for your senior parent, call SYNERGY HomeCare of Corona, Riverside or Anaheim Hills. Our home health caregivers provide quality, compassionate care, which includes:

Personal assistance care: Bathing, showering, using the restroom, getting in and out of bed, wheelchairs, etc.

Errands and transportation: Driving to the doctor’s office or an appointment, picking up prescriptions, going grocery shopping, etc.

Meal assistance: Complete and nutritious meal planning, preparing and cleanup.

Light housekeeping: Assistance with laundry, ironing, changing linens, kitchen/bathroom cleaning and organizing, etc.

Companionship: Encouraging friendly and supportive conversation, active thinking (structuring pastimes, hobbies and games), light exercise, etc.

Call SYNERGY HomeCare of Corona, Riverside or Anaheim Hills to ensure that your senior parent suffering with Alzheimer’s disease receives proper care. Our home health caregivers can help your senior parent manage and even prevent the common health problems caused by Alzheimer’s disease through nutrition and personal assistance management.

Although heart-shaped pendants, fresh-flower arrangements, and fancy-family brunches might make your mother smile on Mother’s Day, give the most loving gift to your mother this Sunday – the gift of health and well-being.

Acknowledging your mother or elderly female loved one on this special day will increase your bond and remind her that she’s special. Sometimes, Mother’s Day poses a daunting task – finding that perfect gift or planning that special occasion to help make her feel unique, cherished, and happy.

Gifts and specially planned activities will allow her to enjoy her day and feel like the most loved woman in the world; however, sometimes the best gift for your elderly loved one may be stress-free living. Consider hiring a SYNERGY HomeCare of Corona/ Riverside caregiver to provide your mother with a convenient, thoughtful, and lasting gift this Mother’s Day.

The time you spend with your aging mother this Mother’s Day can offer important clues about whether she’s safe, mentally sound, and in the best living situation. Approximately 46 percent of women ages 75 and older live alone. Because you may only visit your elderly mother on special occasions or holidays, take the opportunity this Mother’s Day to be on the lookout for signs that indicate she may need a helping hand.

While senior health and well-being issues can be subtle and hard to detect, keep a look out for the following warning signs:

• Weight loss: While small fluctuations in weight are normal, if your mother loses five to 10 percent of her weight in less than three months, it may be a sign of a health problem.
• Worsening controlled health conditions: Your mother may be losing track of medications, missing doses, or not taking medication as prescribed.
• Immobility: An increasing number of slips and falls, problems getting up and down stairs, dizziness, and difficulty walking on steady ground are concerns.
• Isolation: Signs include reluctance to leave the house, run usual shopping errands, and visit friends and family.
• Untidy home: A home that is in need of cleaning or repairs may be a clue that your mother needs some help around the house.

SYNERGY HomeCare caregivers can provide your mother with companionship, personal care, and supplemental homemaking services. View a full list of SYNERGY HomeCare services.

For more information about detecting your mother’s health and well-being, consider reading SYNERGY HomeCare’s free eBook, “Play It Safe – A guide to the subtle warning signs that your aging parent may need help,” in order to ensure that your mother is safe, secure, and at peace of mind. Imagine that your elderly loved one suddenly becomes noticeably forgetful, struggles to complete a conversation, or even appears confused about what may be considered simple, everyday knowledge—their family members, the time, their location, even their own identity.

Before laughing it off, becoming annoyed, or even merely brushing the issue aside, thinking, “Poor Mom, old age is catching up to her…” Don’t dismiss the possibility that it could be something more—it’s important to recognize the signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is a “progressive, degenerative disorder that attacks the brain’s nerve cells, or neurons, resulting in loss of memory, thinking and language skills, and behavioral changes.” It’s the most common cause of dementia (loss of intellectual function) among people age 65 and older.

Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. It is difficult to distinguish between the first signs of Alzheimer’s disease and typical age-related changes that your parent or other loved one may endure.

Unfortunately, a cure for Alzheimer’s disease has not been found. However, executing preventative measures early on may help your loved one feel comfortable, safe, and at ease when living with Alzheimer’s. The sooner the symptoms are recognized and the sooner an accurate diagnosis is made, the easier it is to manage symptoms and plan for the future. Ten early warning signs of

Alzheimer’s include:
1. Memory changes that disrupt daily life
2. Challenges in planning or solving problems
3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks
4. Confusion with time or place
5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
6. New problems with words in speaking or writing
7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
8. Decreased or poor judgment
9. Withdrawal from work or social activities
10. Changes in mood and personality

Today, an estimated 5.4 million individuals are living with Alzheimer’s—the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association recognize the severity of Alzheimer’s disease. The Association will host the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” event on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Cucamonga-Guasti-Regional Park in Ontario to gather the local community and raise Alzheimer’s awareness.

SYNERGY HomeCare of Corona/ Riverside recognizes the Alzheimer’s Association’s efforts to increase Alzheimer’s awareness in our local community and will join the Association to help raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. SYNERGY HomeCare recognizes the negative effects of Alzheimer’s on the elderly and their loved ones and participates in efforts to not only benefit its clients, but also benefit the community as a whole.

To minimize the impact of Alzheimer’s disease on you, the family caregiver, as well as your parent and other family members, recognize the symptoms, get help and get informed. SYNERGY HomeCare strives to alleviate the stresses and frustrations caused by this distressing disease. Don’t try to deal with this alone, get help and support from a caregiver.

Arthritis is the most common cause of disability among U.S. adults. More than 52 million U.S. adults have doctor-diagnosed arthritis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Arthritis may be caused by inflammation of the tissue lining the joints, and can cause people affected to feel pain and stiffness in their hands, knees, shoulders and other locations of the body. Some signs of inflammation include redness, heat, pain and swelling.

Gradually increasing joint pain and stiffness are the most frequent symptoms of arthritis, and they turn simple aspects of life into a daily struggle. When ordinary activities such as eating, bathing, housekeeping and cooking are hindered by stiffness and joint pain, quality of life and safety is jeopardized.

If your senior parent suffers from arthritis, inflammation and joint pain that can negatively affect their nutrition, personal hygiene and mobility, consider reaching out to SYNERGY HomeCare of Corona, Riverside or Anaheim Hills. We offer skilled home health care to your aging loved one –the assistance of a skilled caregiver can help your loved one maintain a healthy lifestyle.

SYNERGY HomeCare Corona, Riverside and Anaheim Hills offers customized care plans for each individual suffering from Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, chronic illness, stroke recovery, cancer, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, arthritis and more.

Depending on your senior parent’s specific needs, care might range from light housekeeping and meal preparation to restroom assistance and round-the-clock safety. Your customized care plan can include:

• Light housekeeping and running errands
• Changing linens, laundry and ironing
• Transfer to/from bed, wheelchair, etc.
• Help with bathing, dressing and grooming
• Scheduling appointments and social activities
• Light exercise, light gardening and transportation
• Nutritious meal planning and preparation
• Assistance with mealtime feeding and restroom use
• Safety and medication reminders
• Standby assistance with morning and evening routines
• Friendly conversation and emotional support

If you’re looking for some at-home remedies to help your senior parent ease their joints into exercise and encourage mobility, consider these tips (remember, if you push too hard, you can overwork the muscles and worsen joint pain – take it easy!):

• Keep the impact low. Low impact exercises like stationary or recumbent bicycles, elliptical trainers or exercise in the water help keep joint stress low while you move.

• Apply heat. Heat can relax your joints and muscles and relieve any pain you have before you begin. Heat treatments – warm towels, hot packs or a shower – should be warm, not painfully hot, and should be applied for about 20 minutes.

• Move gently. Move your joints gently at first to warm up. You might begin with range-of-motion exercises for 5-10 minutes before you move on to strengthening or aerobic exercises.

• Go slowly. Exercise with slow and easy movements. If you feel pain, take a break. Sharp pain and pain that is stronger than your usual joint pain might indicate something is wrong. Slow down if you notice swelling or redness in your joints.

• Ice afterward. Apply ice to your joints for up to 20 minutes as needed after activity, especially after activity that causes joint swelling.
