Why Families Are Confused

Families searching for senior home care in Tucson are often overwhelmed. A quick Google search brings up ads, referral sites, and national brands — many of which don’t actually provide care. Understanding the difference between a local home care agency and a senior referral service can save families time, money, and stress.

What Is Senior Home Care?

Senior home care is non-medical assistance provided in a person’s home to help them remain safe, independent, and comfortable as they age. This includes:

  • Help with bathing, dressing, and mobility
  • Medication reminders
  • Meal preparation and light housekeeping
  • Transportation to appointments
  • Companionship and safety supervision

For the nearly 90% of seniors who want to age in place, in-home care offers personalized, one-to-one support that facilities simply can’t match.

Why Referral Sites Like A Place for Mom Show Up in Search Results

Many families are surprised to learn that A Place for Mom, Aging Care, and Caring.com are referral services, not home care providers. Their role is to:

  • Collect your information
  • Sell your inquiry to senior living facilities or care providers
  • Earn a referral fee if you place services

They can be helpful for assisted living searches, but they are not local care providers do not employ caregivers, and do not oversee day-to-day care.

The Limitations of Referral Services for Senior Home Care

When families rely on referral sites for in-home care, they often encounter:

  • Limited knowledge of local Tucson providers
  • No firsthand relationship with caregivers
  • No accountability once a referral is made
  • Incentives based on placement fees, not care quality
  • Poor experience due to a flood of calls from potential providers

This can be especially challenging for families needing Parkinson’s care, dementia support, hospice assistance, or 24-hour home care in Tucson, where consistency and communication matter most.

Local Tucson Home Care Company Advantages

Why Working Directly with a Local Tucson Home Care Agency Matters

Choosing a local home care provider gives families:

  • Direct communication with the care team
  • Consistent caregivers (not rotating staff)
  • Flexible schedules without minimum hour requirements
  • Ongoing care coordination as needs change
  • Local knowledge of Tucson hospitals, physicians, and resource

At SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson, families work directly with the people responsible for hiring, training, scheduling, and supporting caregivers — not a call center or referral platform.

How SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson Is Different

SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson is one of the area’s most established home care agencies, providing:

Most importantly, we provide care — not referrals.

Questions to Ask Before Choosing Senior Home Care

Before selecting a provider, families should ask:

  1. Do you directly employ your caregivers?
  2. How do you ensure caregiver consistency?
  3. Are there minimum weekly hours?
  4. How do you communicate schedule changes?
  5. What experience do you have with my loved one’s condition?

Referral sites cannot answer these questions — local care providers can.

Frequently Asked Questions About Senior Home Care in Tucson

What is senior home care?

Senior home care is non-medical assistance provided in a person’s home to help them remain safe, independent, and comfortable as they age. Services often include personal care, medication reminders, meal preparation, transportation, companionship, and safety supervision.

Is A Place for Mom a home care company?

No. A Place for Mom, Aging Care, and Caring.com are referral services, not home care providers. They do not employ caregivers or provide hands-on care. Instead, they connect families with senior living communities or care agencies and receive referral fees if a placement occurs.

Is it better to work directly with a local home care agency in Tucson?

For in-home care, yes. Working directly with a local Tucson home care agency allows families to communicate with the people responsible for hiring, training, and supervising caregivers. This often leads to better caregiver consistency, faster response times, and more personalized care.

How much does senior home care cost in Tucson?

The cost of senior home care in Tucson depends on the number of hours needed and the level of support required. Many families find in-home care in Tucson, AZ to be more affordable than assisted living because you only pay for the care you need, rather than a flat monthly facility fee.

Is there a minimum number of hours required for home care?

Some home care agencies require weekly minimum hours, but not all do. It’s important to ask whether care can be scheduled flexibly — from a few hours per week up to 24-hour care — based on your loved one’s needs.

Can home care help someone stay out of assisted living?

Yes. In many cases, senior home care can delay or eliminate the need for assisted living by providing personalized one-to-one support at home. This allows seniors to age in place while maintaining independence and familiar routines.

What types of conditions can home care support?

Home care can support seniors living with Parkinson’s disease, dementia, Alzheimer’s, mobility limitations, chronic illness, or those recovering from surgery or hospitalization. Care plans are customized and adjusted as needs change.

What is 24-hour home care?

24-hour home care provides continuous support, including overnight supervision, safety monitoring, personal care, and assistance with nighttime needs. It is often used for seniors with advanced care needs or safety concerns.

How do home care agencies screen caregivers?

Reputable home care agencies conduct thorough background checks, reference checks, interviews, and training. Many agencies also employ caregivers as W-2 employees, meaning they are bonded, insured, and fully supervised.

How is home care different from home health care?

Home care focuses on non-medical support such as personal care and companionship. Home health care is medical in nature and provided by licensed nurses or therapists, for short-term help, typically following a hospital stay and ordered by a physician.  Home health can include nursing, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.

Can home care help family caregivers?

Yes. Home care provides respite for family caregivers, allowing them to rest, attend appointments, travel, or simply recharge — while knowing their loved one is safe and supported.

How do I choose the best senior home care agency in Tucson?

Families should look for a local agency with strong reviews, experienced caregivers and staff, flexible scheduling, clear communication, and specialized training for conditions like dementia or Parkinson’s disease. Asking direct questions and speaking with a local care coordinator can make the decision clearer.

Final Thoughts: Choosing Care with Confidence

Finding senior home care in Tucson shouldn’t feel confusing or transactional. The best outcomes happen when families partner directly with a local, accountable home care agency that understands the community and puts relationships first.

If you’re exploring care options, speaking directly with a trusted Tucson provider is often the most reassuring first step. Our team will guide you with compassion, transparency, and respect — just as we would want for our own loved ones.

A Guide for Tucson Families

Many Tucson families reach a moment when a loved one can no longer live safely at home without constant support. While some seniors only need a few hours of help a week, others require 24-hour care at home — also called round-the-clock non-medical care or 24/7 home care — to remain safe, comfortable, and independent.

At SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson, our 24-hour home care is personalized to each person’s needs. Our trained 24/7 Tucson caregivers assist with bathing, dressing, toileting, mobility support, companionship, transportation, meal preparation, medication reminders, and safety supervision.

Who needs 24-hour care at home in Tucson?

Seniors Living with Dementia or Alzheimer’s

For those experiencing memory loss, disorientation, wandering, sundowning, or confusion, 24-hour care keeps them safe at home without the stress of unfamiliar environments. Our consistent caregivers provide:

  • Gentle routines and safety supervision
  • Support with bathing, dressing, and toileting
  • Redirection, compassion, and meaningful engagement
  • Overnight safety and fall-prevention support

Because familiarity is essential, SYNERGY HomeCare emphasizes consistent caregiver schedules for dementia and Alzheimer’s clients.  And our person-centered dementia care helps ensure that caregivers understand and appreciate your loved one’s unique personality and needs.

Seniors Returning Home from a Hospital or Rehab Facility

Transitions home after surgery, a fall, stroke, or hospitalization are when accidents, infections, and medication mistakes are most likely. 24-hour home care in Tucson offers:

  • Continuous safety supervision
  • Bathing, toileting, and transfer assistance
  • Support during nighttime mobility needs
  • Temporary or long-term 24/7 care options

Our Concierge Care Program helps you or your loved one recover safely, in the comfort of home.  SYNERGY HomeCare creates a personalized care plan at the start of service and adapts it as recovery progresses. You can adjust your schedule as needed – you are not locked into a contract or minimum number of hours per week.

Individuals with High Fall Risk or Limited Mobility

Many seniors benefit from having awake 24-hour care due to high fall risk, recent surgeries, frailty, or mobility challenges. Our caregivers provide:

  • Safe transfers in and out of bed, wheelchair, or toilet
  • Bathing and toileting support to prevent injury
  • Transportation to medical appointments and errands
  • Immediate help if a fall, dizziness, or confusion occurs

Having someone awake overnight to assist with bathroom needs or repositioning can prevent costly hospitalizations — and preserve independence at home.  Our Tucson 24-hour fall prevention care provides peace of mind for families.

24-hour senior care at home ensures someone is present to assist with:

  • Companionship and emotional support
  • Grocery shopping, errands, and transportation
  • Personal care, hygiene, and meal preparation
  • Overnight safety for bathroom trips and medication reminders

With SYNERGY HomeCare’s optional Family Portal, loved ones can remotely view schedules and care notes.   Our comprehensive senior home care services provide the support needed to live independently and safely in the comfort and familiarity of home.

Those Who Need Medication Reminders on a Strict Schedule

For certain conditions — especially Parkinson’s Disease — medication timing must be exact. Some prescriptions must be taken within minutes of a scheduled time. With 24-hour non-medical care, our trained caregivers provide precise medication reminders to maintain quality of life and safety for your loved one in Tucson.

Tucson Veterans & Seniors Using Long-Term Care Insurance

Tucson has Veterans and spouses who might qualify for 24-hour non-medical care through VA support programs. SYNERGY HomeCare proudly provides respite and Home Health Aide home care services as a Community Care Provider of the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System.

We also work with all Long-Term Care Insurance companies, helping families access benefits quickly without requiring minimum weekly hours of care.  We work with Genworth, John Hancock, State Farm, Northwestern, Mutual of Omaha, Transamerica Life, Bankers Life, Washington National, and every other long term care insurance company.  We help navigate the process and send invoices and care notes directly to the insurance company.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s):

  1. How do I know if my parent needs 24-hour care at home?
If they have dementia, a high fall risk, mobility challenges, nighttime confusion, or strict medication timing, they may need 24-hour supervision at home.
  2. Do 24-hour caregivers stay awake all night?
Yes. Awake overnight caregivers at SYNERGY HomeCare assist with bathroom trips, mobility support, toileting, medication reminders, and fall prevention.
  3. Do I need 24-hour care for dementia at home?
If around-the-clock safety supervision is required, or if hands-on assistance or guidance is required throughout the day and night, 24-hour home care is needed.
  4. Is 24-hour home care cheaper than assisted living in Tucson?
Most seniors pay less for home care because they only pay for the hours they need, rather than a high monthly facility fee with add-on care costs.  We can review schedule options.

Yes. SYNERGY HomeCare supports Tucson veterans and works with all Long-Term Care Insurance companies to make care affordable.

When families in Tucson search for senior caregivers, one of the first questions they ask is: How well trained will the person be who comes into my loved one’s home? It’s a critical concern—and the answer makes all the difference in the safety, dignity, and quality of life of your aging parent or spouse.

At SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson, we believe senior caregivers must combine compassion with professional expertise. That’s why training is at the core of every caregiver we hire and support.

The Foundation: Skills Every Senior Caregiver Needs

Our senior caregivers receive training in both Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). These include bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting/incontinence care, and medication reminders. Training also emphasizes fall prevention, safe transfer techniques, and emergency preparedness—skills that protect seniors and give families peace of mind.

The training that we provide through our office in Tucson includes hands-on training in our skills lab as well as online training.  The skills training for senior caregivers includes bedbound care, safety supervision around the use of walkers and wheelchairs, Gait belt transfers, and brief changes while in bed.  Online senior caregiver training covers a wide variety of topics, including personal hygiene, infection control, and safety supervision.

Specialized Training for Tucson Families

Beyond the basics, our senior caregivers in Tucson receive advanced training tailored to the needs of our community:

  • Parkinson’s Care – Caregivers are educated with training provided through the Parkinson’s Foundation on medication schedules, walking assistance, and safety support.
  • Memory Care – Our Five Pillars of Memory Care program prepares caregivers to support those with Alzheimer’s or dementia with patience and person-centered strategies.
  • Hospital-to-Home Support – Training helps seniors transition safely after surgery or hospital stays, reducing the risk of readmission.  Our goal is to help people remain safely at home while they recover.
  • Hospice and Palliative Care – Senior caregivers learn to provide comfort, dignity, and emotional support at life’s most tender moment.

Certified, Screened, and Supported

Families can feel confident knowing that our Tucson senior caregivers are thoroughly vetted. Each caregiver undergoes federal, state, and local background checks, drug testing, and employment eligibility verification. Many hold CNA or state caregiver certifications, while others become SYNERGY Certified Caregivers through a combination of online and hands-on training. All caregivers are W-2 employees—bonded, insured, and backed by an office team with real caregiving experience.

Why Training Matters in Choosing a Senior Caregiver

The right senior caregiver isn’t just someone who shows up—it’s someone prepared to deliver safe, reliable, and compassionate care. Proper training builds trust, ensures dignity, and helps seniors thrive at home.

Compassionate Senior Caregivers

Thorough training is essential for providing quality senior care.  Compassion is the other component for the delivery of exceptional senior care.  Central to the culture of care at SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson is compassion.  It is a trait that we look for in every caregiver candidate during the hiring and onboarding process.  It is something we cannot train – you either care about other people or you don’t.  We will only hire caregivers that we would feel comfortable caring for our own family members.

FAQ’s: Tucson Senior Caregivers

Are senior caregivers in Tucson certified?
Yes. Many senior caregivers in Tucson, especially at SYNERGY HomeCare, are Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) or state-certified caregivers. Others complete our SYNERGY Certified Caregiver program, which combines online courses with hands-on skills training.

What makes senior caregiver training at SYNERGY HomeCare different?
Unlike some agencies, our training goes beyond basics. Our training includes hands-on and online courses.  Our online training accesses hundreds of topics.  We provide specialized education in Parkinson’s care, dementia and Alzheimer’s care, safe hospital-to-home transitions, and hospice support. This ensures our caregivers are prepared for the unique needs of Tucson seniors.

Do Tucson senior caregivers go through background checks?
Absolutely. Every caregiver at SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson undergoes federal, state, and local background checks, plus drug testing and employment eligibility verification. All employees are authorized to work in the U.S., confirmed through E-Verify  Families can trust that caregivers are professional, bonded, and insured.

Why is training important when choosing a senior caregiver?
Training ensures that caregivers not only know how to provide safe, effective care but also understand how to support seniors with dignity and compassion. Skilled senior caregivers help prevent accidents, manage health conditions, and create a better quality of life for aging loved ones.

What qualifications should a Tucson home caregiver have?
Senior caregivers in Tucson should receive professional training on topics related to Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL’s).  This training helps seniors live safely and independently at home.  SYNERGY HomeCare caregivers are either Certified Nursing Assistants or certified caregivers (through SYNERGY HomeCare or another organization).

How do I check a caregiver’s credentials in Arizona?
The Arizona State Board of Nursing provides an online service to verify the credentials of Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA’s), Licensed Nursing Assistants (LNA’s), and Certified Medical Assistants (CMA’s).  Arizona is a non-licensed state for non-medical caregivers.  SYNERGY HomeCare maintains the records related to the training and experience for each caregiver.

At SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson, we’re proud to provide highly trained senior caregivers who combine professional knowledge with genuine compassion. It’s not just about care—it’s about helping your loved one feel secure, valued, and truly cared for.

When a loved one needs in-home assistance, families often face a critical decision: Should we hire a private caregiver or work with a home care agency? It’s a question we sometimes hear at SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson, and the answer isn’t always straightforward.

Let’s take a look at the key differences — and what’s truly at stake when it comes to the safety, quality, and peace of mind your family deserves.

What’s the Difference?

Private caregivers are hired directly by the family. They may come recommended by a friend, found through online platforms, or from personal ads. In most cases, the family acts as the caregiver’s employer — responsible for taxes, background checks, supervision, scheduling, and more.

Home care agencies, like SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson, employ caregivers directly. The agency handles all of the hiring, screening, training, payroll, insurance, scheduling, and supervision.

Pros and Cons of Hiring a Private Caregiver in Tucson

Potential Advantages:

  • May cost less per hour
  • More control over who is hired
  • Flexible payment arrangements

Risks and Challenges:

  • You become the employer — responsible for payroll, taxes, workers’ compensation, and liability
  • No built-in backup if the caregiver is sick or quits
  • Limited background screening
  • No professional supervision or quality control
  • No training in dementia, Parkinson’s, transfers, or hospice support
  • No insurance or bonding — you bear the liability
  • Often no care documentation or client support systems

Hiring privately may seem more “personal,” but in reality, it often adds more stress to already overwhelmed families — especially when care needs increase or the unexpected occurs.

Why Choose a Home Care Agency in Tucson?

A reputable agency like SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson removes the burden from your shoulders and adds a layer of protection, reliability, and professionalism.

Advantages of Agency Care:

  • Rigorous Screening: All caregivers are thoroughly vetted with local, national, and federal background checks, drug testing, and work authorization verification.
  • E-Verify: SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson runs all potential new hires through E-Verify, ensuring that they are eligible to work in the United States.
  • Training & Experience: Our caregivers are certified, experienced, and trained in specialty care (dementia, Parkinson’s, hospice, transfers, etc.).
  • Licensed, Bonded & Insured: You’re protected from liability if something goes wrong.
  • Backup Care: If a caregiver is sick or unavailable, we provide a qualified replacement — fast.
  • Care Supervision: Your loved one’s care is monitored by our team, including our Care Coordinator who reviews all Care Notes, to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Customized Care Plans: We design a plan based on your loved one’s specific needs and update it as those needs change.
  • Employer Responsibilities: We handle all taxes, benefits, training, and documentation.
  • 24/7 Support: Our local Tucson office is available around the clock. Our phones are answered 24/7 by a live person.  You’re never alone.

And perhaps most importantly — you get peace of mind.

assistance out of wheelchair

What About Cost?

It’s true that private caregivers may charge less per hour, but that doesn’t tell the full story. With a private hire, families often face:

  • Unreported payroll (which can create IRS and legal issues)
  • Out-of-pocket liability for injuries or accidents
  • Gaps in care coverage
  • No protections if the caregiver quits suddenly

With an agency like SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson, you only pay for the care you need, and we take care of everything else. There are no minimum hours required, and we work with long-term care insurance and VA benefits to make care more affordable.

assistance out of wheelchair

Real-Life Peace of Mind

We’ve seen it time and again: families who tried hiring privately, only to switch to agency care when things got complicated. Missed shifts. No-shows. No documentation. No one to call when things went wrong.

With SYNERGY HomeCare, you’re not hiring a person — you’re hiring a team, built around professionalism, communication, and compassion.

Three SYNERGY HomeCare caregivers

Conclusion: Which Is Better?

If you’re seeking short-term companionship for a few hours a week and are willing to take on the risk as an employer, a private caregiver may be an option.

But if your goal is safety, professionalism, flexibility, and peace of mind, an agency like SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson is almost always the better choice.

We don’t just provide caregivers. We provide care — reliable, compassionate, and customized to your family’s unique needs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Q: Is it cheaper to hire a private caregiver in Tucson?
A: Private caregivers may charge lower hourly rates, but the long-term risks and responsibilities — like taxes, liability, and lack of backup — often make agency care the more cost-effective and safer choice.

Q: How does SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson screen its caregivers?
A: All caregivers undergo federal, national, and local background checks, drug testing, reference checks, and in-person interviews. Only the best are selected.  If we would not feel comfortable with that caregiver providing care for our own family, we will not hire that person to care for your family.

Q: What happens if my regular caregiver gets sick?
A: We have a large staff of caregivers and can schedule a backup caregiver for you.

Aging in Place in Tucson, AZ — With the Right Support

As we age, our needs change—but our desire for independence often does not. For most seniors, the goal is clear: to remain in the comfort and familiarity of home for as long as possible. The good news? With the help of non-medical home care, that goal is well within reach.

At SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson, we’ve seen how consistent, compassionate support can help seniors thrive—physically, emotionally, and socially—right where they’re most comfortable: at home. But how exactly does non-medical home care contribute to longer, better living at home?

How Non-Medical Home Care Extends Independence

Enhancing Safety and Preventing Hospital Visits

Many of the leading causes of hospitalization for seniors—falls, medication errors, and isolation—are often preventable. With an in-home caregiver, seniors get help with mobility, medication reminders, and daily routines that reduce these risks. The result? A safer environment and fewer hospital trips.

Supporting Daily Habits that Promote Longevity

Caregivers assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and meal preparation.  Additionally, we help with medication reminders, exercise, and transportation. These tasks may seem routine, but they play a vital role in maintaining health, energy, and confidence over time.

Reducing Loneliness and Encouraging Social Connection

Isolation is more than just lonely—it’s dangerous. Studies show that chronic loneliness can increase health risks in older adults. Caregivers offer more than physical assistance—they offer meaningful companionship that improves mental well-being and keeps clients connected to life.

Easing the Burden on Family Caregivers

When family members act as primary caregivers, burnout is a real concern. Non-medical home care provides much-needed respite so family members can rest, recharge, and maintain normal relationships with their loved ones.

Personalized and Dignified In-Home Support

Home care isn’t one-size-fits-all. At SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson, we customize care plans to meet each client’s unique needs and preferences. Whether it’s support with Parkinson’s care, memory care, 24-hour home care, or general senior care, our caregivers for seniors in Tucson, Arizona help provide the compassionate care that is needed.

Why Choose SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

What is non-medical home care?

Non-medical home care includes help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, cooking, transportation, and companionship. It does not include medical tasks like administering medications, wound care or physical therapy.

What do I do if my loved one needs nursing, physical therapy, or other medical care?

SYNERGY HomeCare has been in Tucson for a long time.  We work closely with many different health care providers.  We know which providers we would recommend for our own family members.

Can in-home care really help someone live longer at home?

Yes. By preventing accidents, promoting wellness, and providing emotional support, non-medical home care reduces hospitalizations and helps seniors maintain independence longer.

Is non-medical home care appropriate for dementia or Parkinson’s?

Yes. At SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson, our caregivers receive advanced training in memory care and Parkinson’s care. They know how to provide safe, respectful, and informed support.

How do I know if my loved one needs home care?

If your loved one is missing medications, experiencing falls, struggling with daily tasks, or becoming socially isolated, it may be time to explore care options. We offer free in-home assessments to guide the process.

Do you require a minimum number of hours per week?

No. Unlike many agencies, we offer flexible scheduling based on your needs—without a minimum hour requirement.

How do I pay for non-medical home care in Tucson, AZ?

Although Medicare does not reimburse for non-medical care, there are other options.  SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson is a community care provider through the VA, providing care to military veterans.  We work with all long term care insurance companies and make the reimbursement process easy for our clients.  In regard to private pay, our rates are very competitive and you only pay for the care you need.

Can home caregivers help with meal preparation and light housekeeping?

Generally as people age, it is common for basic daily activities to become less important to them.  And some simple tasks like vacuuming and bathroom cleaning can become strenuous.  Our caregivers for seniors can prepare nutritious meals and do housekeeping.

Understanding the Right Time for Palliative Care

When a loved one is living with a serious illness—such as cancer, congestive heart failure, COPD, advanced Parkinson’s disease, or Alzheimer’s—families often ask a deeply important question: “What’s next?”

Palliative care is a good option for many families who are in this situation.  Unlike hospice, which is typically reserved for end-of-life care, palliative care can begin at any stage of a serious illness. Its focus is not on curing that disease, but on relieving symptoms, improving comfort, and enhancing quality of life—for both the individual and their family.

In Tucson, palliative care may be under-discussed or under-utilized, even though it could greatly benefit patients earlier in the course of serious illness.  That’s why organizations like SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson play a critical role: by filling the palliative support gap—offering comfort-focused care in the home before hospice is appropriate or alongside existing medical treatments.

At SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson, we walk with families during these challenging times, offering expert, compassionate care that supports dignity, peace, and personalized attention.  We work with other providers in Tucson as a team to provide the care needed.

Signs It May Be Time to Consider Palliative Care

How do I know if my parent or other loved one needs palliative home care?  Here are common indicators that it may be time to explore palliative care services:

Frequent Hospitalizations or Emergency Department Visits

If your loved one is often hospitalized or has frequent trips to the ED, it may indicate that their illness is progressing and that symptom management at home could improve their quality of life.

Difficult-to-Manage Symptoms

Unrelieved pain, nausea, breathlessness, anxiety, or fatigue may mean that your loved one would benefit from palliative support designed to ease these symptoms.

Emotional or Spiritual Distress

Serious illnesses take a toll not only on the body but on the mind and spirit. Palliative care can include emotional support and guidance for individuals and families navigating uncertainty, grief, or fear.

Decline in Function or Independence

If daily activities—such as dressing, showering, walking, or eating—become difficult, a caregiver trained in palliative support can offer comfort and safety at home while helping maintain as much independence as possible.

Caregiver Burnout or Overwhelm

Family caregivers carry a heavy emotional and physical load. Palliative care services provide vital respite and professional support so that families can focus on meaningful time with their loved one.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What’s the difference between palliative care and hospice care?
Palliative care can begin at any stage of a serious illness and may be provided alongside curative treatment. Hospice care is specifically for end-of-life care when treatment is no longer being pursued.

Why does hospice care seem to be offered more often than palliative care?
Hospice companies typically focus on hospice care due to reimbursement and their service models.  Hospice services are clearly defined and fully covered under the Medicare Hospice Benefit (Part A) for eligible patients. Covered services include nursing, social work, and chaplaincy, as well as some equipment.  Hospices are typically staffed and structured to provide these specific services.

Does Medicare cover palliative care?
Yes. Palliative care services are broadly covered by Medicare, similar to other types of healthcare.  Medicare Part A covers hospital visits, skilled nursing facilities, and home health visits by nurses following hospitalization.  Medicare Part B covers doctors’ office visits, durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, and some medications.  Medicare Advantage Plans are supplemental to original Medicare (same benefits and services) and cover prescription drugs.

Can my loved one continue taking their existing medications while on palliative care?
Yes.  While on palliative care, patients will typically continue taking their standard medications.  It is best to consult your doctor for any prescription medication changes.  This is true for both palliative care and hospice care.

Is palliative care only for cancer patients?
No. Palliative care supports people with many conditions including heart failure, COPD, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, and more.

Can palliative care be provided at home?
Yes. SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson provides in-home palliative support, helping individuals remain comfortable in the setting they love most.

How do I know if palliative care is right for my loved one?
If your loved one is experiencing difficult symptoms, emotional stress, or is struggling with daily tasks due to a serious illness, palliative care may help. A care consultation can help clarify needs and options.

Choosing the Right Senior Caregivers in Tucson

Finding reliable, compassionate caregivers for seniors in Tucson, AZ is one of the most important decisions families make. Whether you’re seeking part-time help or 24/7 home care, asking the right questions can help you choose a trustworthy agency that prioritizes safety, communication, and personalized care.

At SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson, we encourage families to ask these key questions — we are happy to answer these questions and any other questions you might have.

Top Questions to Ask a Home Care Agency

How long have you been providing home care services in Tucson?

Look for an agency with a proven history in the local community. Experience often means well-established processes and strong caregiver support systems.

SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson has proudly served seniors since 2006, making us one of the most trusted names in Southern Arizona.

Are your caregivers employees or independent contractors?

Agencies that employ caregivers (vs. hiring them as contractors) typically provide more training, oversight, and insurance protection for clients.

All of our caregivers are W-2 employees—fully insured, bonded, and background-checked for your peace of mind.  You never need to worry about being considered their employer, and the risks associated with being an employer.

What kind of background checks do your caregivers undergo?

You should expect thorough criminal background checks, reference checks, and drug testing.

Our caregivers go through national, state, and local background checks.  Some companies rely on free, publicly available sources of information that often miss critical details. Instead, we pay for criminal background checks in Tucson, the state of Arizona, and across the country for employees who have lived out of state.  We perform drug testing on site.  Our staff verify employment and call references for new hires.

What kind of training do you provide for your caregivers?

You should expect thoroughly trained caregivers.  Caregivers should be trained on specific skills such as bathing and transferring.  Caregivers should also be trained on diseases and conditions associated with seniors.

We provide skills-based training in our office training center.  During our training, we use a variety of equipment including hospital bed, walkers, wheelchairs, transfer devices, oxygen concentrator, and blood pressure monitor. Our trainer also covers a range of topics including dementia and hospice care.  Our online certification training includes topics such as dementia, Parkinson’s, cancer care, and other specialties.

Will we have the same caregiver each visit?

Consistency matters, especially for seniors with memory loss or those needing personal care.  Ask about their policy for caregiver continuity.

We don’t rotate caregivers at random. Our staff match you with someone based on personality and care needs—then strive for schedule consistency.  We know how important it is for dementia clients to have the same caregiver.  We also understand that home care is personal – nobody wants to see a total stranger show up on bath day.

How do you handle scheduling and last-minute changes?

A good agency will have systems in place to notify you of any changes, confirm schedules, and ensure backup care if needed.

We confirm each caregiver’s visit and notify you of any changes. Our GPS-based system alerts us if a caregiver is running late.

Is there a minimum number of care hours per week?

Some companies require you to commit to a set number of hours per week, even if you don’t need them.

SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson offers flexible care plans with no weekly minimums—you only pay for the care you need.

Can family members view schedules, caregiver notes, and invoices?

Transparency is important—especially for adult children managing care from out of state.

We offer a Family Portal for secure, real-time access to schedules, care notes, and billing information.

What types of care do you specialize in?

Not all agencies have expertise in advanced care needs like dementia, Parkinson’s, hospice, or post-hospital transitions.

We specialize in senior care, dementia and Alzheimer’s care, Parkinson’s, hospital-to-home transitions, hospice and palliative care, and 24/7 in-home caregiving.

Can I reach your agency 24 hours a day, seven days a week?

Caring for people is a 24/7 business.  You should be able to reach agency staff on nights and weekends, not just Monday through Friday during normal business hours.

We answer our phones 24 hours a day, every day of the week, including holidays.  A live human being answers our phone.  You will not be sent through a menu of prompts or be forced to leave a message.

Are you a locally owned and operated company?

Some senior home care agencies are operated by a national company.  Others claim to be “locally owned” but the owner lives in Phoenix or in another state, and the office staff manages the daily operations.

SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson is owned by Randy and Lisa Landvik-Geyen.  Lisa and Randy live in Tucson.  You can call and speak to the owners at any time.  Randy is actively involved in the daily operations and completes many of the new client assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What services do caregivers for seniors provide?

They help with bathing, dressing, meals, medication reminders, transportation, companionship, and more—tailored to each person’s needs. A senior caregiver provides 1:1 care.  A caregiver will enhance quality of life and improve safety.

How quickly can services begin after an initial call?

Often within 24–48 hours. We complete an in-home assessment and build a custom care plan to match the right caregiver.

Is home care more affordable than assisted living in Tucson?
Yes. With home care, you pay only for the care you need. Many families find this more affordable—and more personal—than facility-based care.

Are your caregivers trained for Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s care?

Yes. Our caregivers receive specialized training for both conditions, including mobility support, safety supervision, medication reminders, and communication techniques.

Does insurance cover the cost of senior home care?

Long term care insurance (LTCI) does cover the cost of in home care.  We work with all LTCI companies.  Typically Medicare does not reimburse for home care.  There are some plans that provide coverage for a few hours per month, but even this is relatively rare.

Is respite care available for family caregivers in Tucson?

Yes.  Often a primary benefit of hiring a senior caregiver is respite care for the children of senior parents or for the significant other of the senior.  Respite care can be scheduled on a recurring basis or as needed for medical appointments, social engagements, or travel.

For many Tucson families, ensuring a loved one can age safely and comfortably at home is a top priority.  Whether due to dementia, chronic illness, hospital discharge, or mobility challenges, 24/7 home care offers peace of mind and personalized support. But how much does it cost in Tucson—and what should families expect?

Average Cost of 24/7 Home Care in Tucson

The average cost of 24/7 home care in Tucson is $30 to $42 per hour.  This equates to a daily cost of $720 to $1,008.  This falls in line with the national average cost for 24/7 home care.   Costs can vary depending upon the type and level of care needed.  Home care agencies will typically offer a discount for 24/7 care.

Types of 24-Hour Home Care

There are two basic models of 24-hour care:

Shift-Based Care: Multiple caregivers rotate in shifts to ensure the client receives alert, active care 24/7. This option is ideal for individuals needing frequent support during both day and night.  This helps ensure the highest level of safety supervision.

Live-In Care: A caregiver lives in the client’s home and provides assistance during the day, with availability for emergencies overnight. This model is more affordable, but assumes the client does not need regular overnight assistance.

What Factors Influence the Cost?

Several factors influence the cost of 24/7 home care:

  • Level of care: A significant amount of hands-on care, including extensive transfer assistance, or advanced dementia care can increase the cost.  However, caregivers are able to assist with a wide variety of daily tasks, and unlike assisted living facilities, there is not an ala cart menu of additional charges – the price of home care is inclusive of all typical care needs.
  • Caregiver qualifications: This goes hand-in-hand with the level of required care.  Caregivers with higher levels of certification and/or training may be needed for higher levels of care.
  • Agency support: Reputable agencies offer supervision, insurance, and training.  A number of agencies in Tucson employ a large number of caregivers, helping ensure 24/7 coverage for you or your loved one.
  • Location:  It might be harder to staff areas far from central Tucson.  Caregiving agencies may charge a slight premium for these areas in order to pay caregivers more to drive greater distances.  Some agencies may not service the broader Tucson area.
  • Couples care: A single caregiver will typically be able to assist two people in the same household on the same shift.  Caregiving agencies will typically charge a premium for couples care.   This premium is relatively insignificant compared to the cost differential for couples care in an assisted living facility.

Are There Ways to Offset the Cost of 24/7 Home Care?

There are some options to explore when considering how to pay for 24/7 home care in Tucson:

Long-Term Care Insurance: These insurance policies from Genworth Financial, State Farm, Northwestern Insurance Company, Washington National Insurance Company, Mutual of Omaha, Transamerica Life, United National Life, Lincoln Financial Group, and others cover the cost of home care.  SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson works with all long term care insurance companies and makes the process extremely easy for clients.

Veterans Administration: The VA provides some support for Veterans who require in-home care.  The VA Community Care program pays for  caregivers under the Homemaker/Home Health Aide (HHHA) and Respite Care services.  SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson provides services to Veterans under both HHHA and Respite.  The separate Aid & Attendance Pension Benefit program from the VA provides a monthly financial benefit to Veterans and/or surviving spouses who served during wartime and meet financial need-based requirements.

Reverse Mortgages: There is an increasing number of companies offering reverse mortgage products.  While this type of financial product is not the best option for everyone, there are circumstances for which it can be an attractive option.  It is best to consult a financial advisor when considering a reverse mortgage, and for evaluating the various options.

Aging at Home Is More Than a Preference—It’s a Lifeline

There’s a quiet truth shared by most seniors: they want to stay in their own homes as they age. The familiarity of their neighborhood. The scent of morning coffee in their own kitchen. These little things bring peace, independence, and dignity.

At SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson, we help make that desire a reality—safely, compassionately, and with personalized care that fits each individual’s needs.

Caregiver assisting client with meal preparation at home.

The Desire to Age in Place Is Universal

Research shows nearly 90% of seniors want to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. But challenges like chronic illness, mobility limitations, and lack of nearby family can make daily life difficult to manage alone.

Without proper support, everyday tasks can become risks.

What Makes Aging in Place Hard Without Help?

Aging in place doesn’t mean doing everything alone. But it often means needing help with:

  • Personal Care: Bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting
  • Medication Management: Reminders and scheduling
  • Transportation & Errands: Appointments, groceries, pharmacy
  • Meal Prep & Housekeeping: Daily routines and nutrition
  • Companionship: Fighting isolation and staying engaged
  • Mobility Support: Transferring, walking, and fall prevention

These needs don’t mean it’s time to move to assisted living. They just mean it’s time to bring in support—on your terms.

How SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson Helps Seniors Thrive at Home

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What does “aging in place” really mean?

Aging in place refers to the ability of older adults to live safely and independently in their own homes, rather than moving to assisted living or nursing homes. With the help of professional in-home care, seniors can continue enjoying the comfort and familiarity of their home environment.

How do I know if my loved one needs in-home care?

Look for signs like missed medications, unclean living spaces, social withdrawal, falls, or difficulty with daily tasks such as bathing or preparing meals. These indicators suggest that some support may be needed to ensure safety and well-being.

Can we receive care just a few hours a week?

SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson offers flexible care options with no minimum weekly hour requirements. Whether it’s two hours a day or 24/7 support, we tailor care plans to fit your family’s needs.  And you can increase or decrease the amount of care you need with only 24-hour notice.

Is home care more affordable than assisted living?

In many cases, yes. With in-home care, you only pay for the time and services you need—unlike assisted living facilities that charge high monthly rates regardless of care levels. It’s a scalable and often more cost-effective solution.  In many senior living facilities, help with basic care needs comes at an additional cost.  In the case of home care, there is no additional cost as care needs change.

Will the same caregiver come each time?

We prioritize caregiver consistency to foster trust, familiarity, and continuity of care—especially important for clients with dementia, Alzheimer’s, or personal care needs. We understand that personal care is personal.  Unlike some agencies, we don’t use a rotating pool of unfamiliar caregivers.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

If your loved one wants to stay in their home but needs a little help, we’re here to make it easier. Whether you live across the street or across the country, you can rest assured they’re in capable, caring hands.

When you’re living with Parkinson’s Disease, every movement matters. But here’s the encouraging news: the right kind of movement can make a real difference.

Exercise isn’t just a recommendation—it’s a game-changer. Research indicates that regular physical activity can improve balance, flexibility, strength, and even mood. For individuals with Parkinson’s, this translates to enhanced stability, increased confidence, and a better chance of engaging in activities that bring joy and meaning to life.  And exercise has powerful brain health benefits.

According to a 2024 study by the Yale School of Medicine, the dopamine-producing neurons in participants’ brains had grown healthier after six months of high-intensity aerobic exercise.  According to Sule TInaz, MD, PhD “The medications we have available are only for symptomatic treatment.  They do not change the disease course.  But exercise seems to go one step beyond and protect the brain at the neuronal level.”

This isn’t about running marathons; it’s about the simple pleasures—walking the dog without fear of falling, dancing with a loved one, tending to a garden. It’s about maintaining dignity, independence, and the joy of feeling strong in your own body.

The Parkinson’s Foundation promotes a Fitness Friday program centered around improving the balance, strength, safety, and confidence of those living with Parkinson’s. This video from staff members of PWR!Gym in Tucson, Arizona features exercises and movements focused on mobility, coordination, and balance. The moves are varied, challenging your cognitive ability as well as your coordination.

At SYNERGY HomeCare of Tucson, we understand the profound impact of movement. Our caregivers are trained to support safe and effective exercise routines—whether that’s stretching at home, taking a walk, or adhering to a physical therapy plan.  Our caregivers are also able to assist with personal care, medication reminders, and respite care.  SYNERGY HomeCare provides specialized Parkinson’s care.

Parkinson’s may be part of your story, but exercise helps ensure it’s not the whole story.

Let’s keep moving—together.
