SYNERGY HomeCare of Cheyenne was recently recognized as a top caregiving company in the region by the Wyoming Tribune Eagle. The company was named the winner in the Home Health Care Services division of the 2022 “Best of the Best,” the official community choice awards sponsored by the newspaper.

SYNERGY HomeCare owners Rande and Rita Pouppirt revealed exactly what sets their company apart: an authentic desire to help people and make their lives fuller. They also attribute much of their success in their business to hiring great people.

“Our caregivers are the backbone of the industry, and I tell them that every day,” says Rita. “The company’s high ratings are a direct result of their personalized interactions with the people who entrust us with their care. They’re the ones making real, tangible improvements in the lives of people who rely on us for compassionate care.”

Rande and Rita own and operate two other successful local businesses, Pouppirt Architects, which was established in 1983, and Rande’s Ritz which opened in 2005. The couple became acquainted with SYNERGY HomeCare of Cheyenne when they hired a caregiver from the company to care for Rita’s mother, who has since moved into an assisted living facility. When Jeff Pederson, the original owner of SYNERGY HomeCare of Cheyenne, had to relocate and sell the company, he approached the Pouppirts, who were attracted to the opportunity to serve their community in a personal and powerful way.

“We were excited to follow in Jeff’s footsteps and continue to go above and beyond for our clients and leverage the incredible momentum he created in connecting the community with compassionate caregivers for the last 11 years,” said Rita.

Headquartered at 2400 Dunn Avenue Suite A, the company serves Cheyenne and greater Laramie County to provide clients with a wide variety of non-medical care options, from companion care and personal care to specialized care for people with chronic health conditions or recovering from illness or surgery.

Rande and Rita’s top two priorities are providing timely, reliable and personalized care to all of her clients, and making sure they find the best potential caregivers to do so.

“It might sound obvious, but we only look for the people who truly care – the ones who are in it for the caregiving process itself,” explains Rande. “This is a position that requires one-on-one care, so our number one priority is hiring the right people who can provide that level of support and empathy.”

SYNERGY HomeCare of Cheyenne is always looking to add to their team of award-winning caregivers. While licensed Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are ideal candidates, anyone who is capable and eager to help others suits the requirements of joining the team. The company will provide training and certification for people new to the field.

Caring, compassionate people with a respect for older adults are invited to apply by visiting https://synergyhomecare.com/wy-cheyenne-82001/about-us/ or calling office manager Kayla Hutchings at 307-426-4177.

The Pros and Cons

The COVID-19 pandemic has a lot of people on edge, particularly those who are concerned with the well-being of loved ones at high-risk of contracting the virus. The CDC states “The risk for severe illness with COVID-19 increases with age, with older adults at highest risk. Severe illness means that a person diagnosed with COVID-19 may require hospitalization, intensive care, a ventilator to help them breathe or may even die.”

For adult children of aging parents, the fear is real. Many adult children have parents in assisted living facilities where exposure to the virus is even greater – but that doesn’t mean that adult children have the means to care for an elderly parent 24 hours a day. There are pros and cons in establishing a new living arrangement between adult children and their elderly parents. Let’s explore those.

PROS

  • Moving aging parents out of a facility can ease the worry and fear that adult children are experiencing because of the pandemic.
  • Removing aged parents from a facility can strongly decrease exposure to the virus
  • Aging parents will have more companionship in their children’s homes.
  • Costs for caring for aging parents can decrease depending on the situation.
  • Aged parents get to spend more quality time with their children and other family members.
  • Adult children will see first-hand how their parents are doing physically, mentally and emotionally on a day-to-day basis.
  • Extra support is available to caregivers in-home. Places like Synergy Home Care have direct support staff who can provide in-home respite care, companionship for your parents, light housekeeping and errand running and more.
  • Providing care to family members sets an example for young children and other family members and sets a standard of how family takes care of each other.
  • Adult children often feel great personal satisfaction knowing that they are giving back the love and support that their parents showed them. Personal satisfaction is a huge reward for many caregivers – especially after loved ones have passed.

CONS

  • Adult children may not realize the time and energy it takes to care for their parents.
  • There may be costs to move parents from a facility to the adult child’s home, as well as possible ongoing costs with the facility – depending on the situation.
  • Adult children may have to get the home “senior-ready” which might include taking space away from the adult child to provide room for the parent.
  • Aging parents may feel like an imposition on their adult children.
  • Adult children will be responsible for their parent’s doctor visits, prescription monitoring, diet, etc.
  • Caring for a family member can put additional stress on family units and may cause arguments between spouses and children. Close-quarter living arrangements can cause resentment with children and could be detrimental to the parent-child relationship. This factor should be carefully considered before altering the family dynamic.

The pros and cons are large. Caring for an aged parent is not an easy job. Though rewarding, the responsibilities are constant and the stress involved is very real. But there are options available to caregivers that can alleviate that tension and burden. In-home support staff can take a chunk of the responsibility off the shoulders of adult children and help create a more fun and enjoyable living situation for everyone in the home.

For the elderly individual who need assistance getting through each day, having a close family member standing by to offer care is often the most desirable choice. However, it may not always be possible for family members to offer the level of care needed. Finding an in-home caregiver who comes in for a few hours each day or more is often beneficial for family caregivers and their loved ones.

Finding care can be a challenge for many families. A number of roadblocks tend to come up. These need to be addressed before finalizing any senior care decisions.

Obtaining the care needed

Finding ways to manage senior home care needed may not be easy at first. When there is only an hour or two of care needed each day, it can be easier to find help from family or friends. The need for care can expand with time, though, requiring longer hours by professional caregivers. A number of options exist to help families meet such additional needs.

While family members can offer care to some extent, hiring the right in-home care professionals can help alleviate the added responsibility. Respite for family caregivers can help both you and your loved ones maintain a happy and healthy life. Taking care of yourself and getting the care your aging loved one needs is mutually beneficial.

Make sure that you hire the right professionals

Offering care to your loved ones requires more than the ability to do a few simple chores. It requires training and knowledge of the health conditions that affect seniors, sensitivity and patience. Many families aim to minimize costs by attempting to find caregivers through classified ads, only to come up against challenges. Inadequate training, an unwillingness to commit to regular attendance each day, and complications to do with background checks can all be difficult. The tax burdens, worker’s comp and insurances that need to be considered when hiring through a private party are all taken care of with a professional in-home care agency such as SYNERGY HomeCare. Finding caregivers through a trustworthy company is a more sensible proposition.

Working with resistance to care

Family caregivers sometimes find that care receivers are resistant to care. Attempts to offer personal hygiene, grooming, medication, exercise and other forms of care are met with an unwillingness to go along. Such resistance may come about through cognitive difficulty due to aging, or because of painful conditions that aren’t addressed correctly.

Finding the right company to help make care more acceptable can be difficult. At SYNERGY HomeCare we believe it takes professional training to recognize the kind of approach that works. Professional caregivers in Cheyenne, WY, for instance, are trained to recognize such situations, and help families seek the right kind of attention for the care they deserve.
